Explore Laas
France This Way review: the village of Laas is usually visited for the castle in the village, but here we want to mention how pretty the village itself is and encourage you to pause here if you are travelling between Navarrenx and Sauveterre-de-Béarn!
The main car park is near the entrance to the Chateau de Laas and the whole village is easy to access from here: I should emphasise, this is a very small village and will not take you long to explore (unless you are also visiting the castle), but there are several charming cottages and a beautiful backdrop of hills and lots of pretty views to enjoy.
As you walk through the village towards the church you can see the cottages and a stream, and you will notice that the residents pay lots of attention to plants and flowers that bring the charm to the village.
The main church, built in the 19th century, is not particularly noteworthy - it is very typical of village churches built at that time - although there are information boards around the outside walls that are interesting.
There is a restaurant close to the church and a signpost in front of the chuch to let you know the distance to many important cities and countries around the world, in case you are inspired by the scenery to set off walking....
Chateau de Laas
The Chateau de Laas is the main reason visitors come to the village. The chateau was built in the 17th century in the classical style and retains its original appearance. The castle offers various attractions to visitors including:
- The Serbat Museum, a collection of objects accumulated by the family who owned the chateau until 1965 and now presented in authentic recreations of 18th century living accommodation
- Formal gardens and an extensive park around the Chateau de Laas
- A small theme park
- A bamboo garden
- An "escape room" experience
At the roundabout beyond the church you can follow the road to the chapel Saint-Bartholomew, an ancient roman style chapel next to the cemetery and about 500 metres outside the centre of Laas. The chapel is on a small hill so you also get pretty views across the fields and village during your stroll.
Attractions nearby
The two most important places to explore near Laas are Sauveterre-de-Béarn, a small town about 15 kilometres to the north-west of here with an impressive roman style church and pretty views across the river and countryside, and Navarrenx, a village that is a similar distance to the south-east that has retained most of its medieval fortifications.
