France This Way review: although it is a small place, the area around the church in Lubersac is pretty and the town makes for an interesting detour if you are passing
Start your visit to Lubersac with a walk around the Church of Saint-Etienne. There are several attractive houses around the church.
The Church of Saint-Etienne was built in the 10th century, in the roman style. On the outside it is the entrance, with its series of concentric arches, and the chevet, with several carved capital stones still visible, that are the most interesting features.
Inside the church there are further carved capital stones, representing stories from the Bible and dating from the 11th and 12th centuries. You can also see the memorial stone for Bernard de Lubersac, from the 16th century, and various other artworks.
There is a park in the area behind the church.
In the main square in the centre of Lubersac, the Place de l'Horloge, there is a very charming house called the "maison des archiprêtres".
The house was built at the end of the 15th century and has substantial stone arcades at the ground level and decorative windows at the upper level, carved by Italian artists. There is also a clock in the centre of the roof, that gives the name to the square.
The house was originally occupied by the archpriests, then later used as the town hall until the middle of the 20th century, and now holds the Lubersac tourist offoce, a shop called the Maison des Arts et du Goût that sells regional produce, and various exhibitions.
Attractions nearby
On the edge of Lubersac you can visit the park that surround the Chateau de Verdier. A castle has stood here since the 15th century, although the original castle burned down and was rebuilt in 1850.
Close to here you can visit the very pretty village of Ségur-le-Château, and also the historic cente of Uzerche, a very charming and largely undiscovered town on the banks of the Vézère river.
