Explore Clohars-Carnoët

France This Way review: Doelan is a pretty port village and fans of Gauguin will wan to visit Le Pouldu where Gauguin and some of his contemporaries lived and painted for a while.

Doelan is a charming fishing village. It lies along both banks of the estuary and its white houses with slate or thatched rooves rise up above the estuary.

The water is dotted with fishing boats and the distinctive blue and orange lifeboat.

Doelan was once a thriving sardine fishing port with 100 boats, 500 sailors and four canneries. The last of these, the Captain Cook cannery closed in Doelan in 1998 but moved to Clohars-Carnët.

Adding to the charm of the port is a green and white striped lighthouse and a red and white striped lighthouse.

It is possible to get a ferry from Doelan to the Ile de Groix.

There is a pretty coastal path from Doelan to Le-Pouldu.

In the 1880s the isolated seaside village of Le Pouldu was discovered by some artists. Its pretty houses and range of landscapes from the sea with its dunes and cliffs to the surrounding woods and fields were a big attraction.

In 1886 Paul Gaugin was staying in Pont-Aven nearby and came to visit often to paint around Le Pouldu.

In 1889 he moved into the village and stayed at the Destais hostel. Paul Sérusier came to join him and Meijer de Haan and Charles Filiger too.

Later in the year the group moved to La Buvette de la Plage owned by Marie Henry. They painted in the style of a post-Impressionism movement called Synthetism.

In the autumn of 1889 the group of painters painted frescoes throughout the house. These have since been removed and can be found in art galleries around the world.

The original Buvette de la Plage no longer exists but it was recreated in a 19th century house with the same layout just a few meters away from the original. This Maison-Musée is open to the public.

The beautiful frescoes have been recreated too and the dining room and bedrooms of the artists have been recreated to provide an impression of the life of the artists here at Le Pouldu.

As well as visiting the museum there is a walk taking in some of the main places the painters painted and notice boards display copies of some of these. There are two possibilites, a 2 km and a 5 km walk.

You can also visit the Chapelle Notre Dame de la Paix in the centre of Le Pouldu which has stained glass windows by Alfed Manessier and Jean Le Moal.

The beaches of Le Pouldu are also of course a key attraction. The plage de Kerou is a surfing beach and the Plage de Bellangenêt and the Plage des Grands Sables are great for families.
