France This Way review: The traditional thatched cottages of the hamlet of Kerascoët are beautiful and as they are close to the coast make a day of it with some time on the sandy beach of Ropisco or do one of the pretty walks in the area.
Kerascoët is a charming little hamlet of stone cottages with thatched rooves just 500 meters from the sea.The hamlet is free of cars but there is a car park just next to it where you can park easily.
The cottages were built in the 15th century in a traditional Breton style and are built in the local granite. The roofs are thatched with reeds though originally they would have used rye straw. Reeds are more durable and so these are used now.
As is traditional in the area the cottages usually have blue or red shutters. Each house is a little different and many have roses, hydrangeas, geraniums or other flowering plants growing next to them and adding to the charm.
You will notice the end of two houses in particular where large granite blocks have been glued together and covered with a thatched roof. These granite blocks are monoliths and houses built like this are called "standing stone houses" and are unique in France.
Plage de Rospico
After walking round the village you can walk to the coast and along the coastal path to the pretty Rospico cove. This is a particularly good beach for families with small children as large pools of shallow water are left when the tide goes out.
There are rocky cliffs at the edges of the beach and rocks and rock pools to explore at the edges of the beach.
Attractions nearby
The plage de Raguénez, also known locally as the plage de Tahiti is considered to be one of the nicest on this stretch of coast. It is known by the locals as the plage de Tahiti because of its white sandy beach and the turqoise colours of the sea.
There is an island in the sea opposite the beach. The island is private but you are allowed to walk over at low tide. That way you can get lovely views back over the Raguénez beach.
Alternatively you could drive to Kercanic which is another hamlet of thatched cottages that is nearby.
There are lots of walking paths in the area and the 'Sentier des Douaniers' or 'Custom's officers' path' is particularly popular.
This is a coastal path which stretches 2000km from Mont Saint Michel to Saint Nazaire along the Brittany coast. It has been voted the favourite of all the long distance paths in France.
Concarneau and Pont Aven are two of the unmissable towns of the area.
