Explore Cholet

France This Way review: Cholet is not a tourist town but it has a pleasant centre focused around its church and ancient theatre.

Notre Dame church

The centre of your visit to Cholet will be the Place Travot where two of the main buildings of Cholet can be found; the Notre Dame church and the ancient theatre.

The square has a grey stone floor, a pond with fountains and raised beds full of flowers. There is also an old fashioned carousel.

To increase further the attractiveness of the square bright red planters filled with palms and bamboo have been dotted around the square as well as red umbrellas with red bench seating where you can sit and enjoy the summer sunshine.

The Notre Dame church on the edge of the Place Travot began as a priory in the 11th century and in 1813 the building of the current church began.

The nave and bell towers were completed at the end of the 19th century and the spires are 65 meters high.

The neo classical theatre dates back to 1886. It was damaged by a fire in 1949 and then restored. In 2011 it was converted from a theatre to a commercial building and is currently a 4 star Mercure hotel.

Elsewhere the street of the most interest in Cholet is the Saint Jean-Paul II street which is one of the oldest in the town and links the Jardin du Mail and the Notre Dame church.

Notice its wrought iron balconies, its bull's-eye windows, its arched doors and windows and a belvedere on one of the houses.

There are two main museums in Cholet. The museum of Art and History and the Museum of Textiles and Fashion.

The history museum focuses mainly on the wars of the Vendee and the art museum features contemporary art and works by Pierre Charles Tremolieres who was born in Cholet.

The textile museum is located in a former laundry and highlights weaving and bleaching techniques. The famous red handkerchief of Cholet is produced here.

In 1793 during the 'Wars of the Vendée' the 'Battle of Cholet' took place. The war had the Vendeans against the Republicans. Henri de la Rochejaquelein wore the three white handkerchiefs of Cholet on his side, hat and chest in order to be easily recognised to his men.

Unfortunately this made him an easy target for the Republicans and his white handkerchief became stained red with his blood when he was wounded.

Since then Cholet has become famous for its red handkerchief with white stripes.

Cholet has several prehistoric megaliths, the most noteworthy is the "Grand Menhir de la Garde" which can be found in front of the ramparts near to the town hall.
