The village of Aubigné-sur-Layon, classified as a 'village of charm', is situated near the southern edge of the Pays-de-la-Loire region, near the border with the Poitou-Charentes region, south of Angers and west of Saumur.

The fortunes of the village are closely linked to the vineyards that you will see in the surrounding countryside.

France This Way reviewaire: Aubigné-sur-Layon is a small village and it won't take you long to explore but a visit is recommended when you are in the region or exploring the Layon Valley.

The centre of the village, in a lovely setting in the Layon Valley, is dominated by the two square towers and sturdy walls of its fortified castle. The castle dates from the 12th century although part of what we see today was added in the 15th century. Inside the castle walls you can see the remains of other small buildings and a pretty garden.

You can also see the 11th century church of Saint-Denis in Aubigné-sur-Layon, which is a good example of the roman style of architecture in the region. Go inside the church to see the 18th century frescoes.

There are some other notable buildings in the village, such as a 17th century priory and a presbytery. The entrance to the priory is very interesting and most unusual, with two tours joined by a short balustraded path above the gateway.

Aubigne-sur-Layon is just one of the many 'small yet idyllic' villages that you will come across as you visit the valley and the region - with the special feature for Aubigne-sur-Layon of also being listed as a 4* ville fleurie - a significant accolade for any town, a substantial achievement for a small village. The village has also won awards at the European level for its flowers and gardens

The number of flowers and carefully tended gardens you will come across in the central square, around the houses, in the gardens, and in particular in the garden of the presbytery add a great deal of additional pleasure (and colour) to a visit, and make a visit to Aubigné particularly recommended.
