The village of Trigance is in the Var department of Provence, near the eastern end of the Gorges du Verdon: visitors will usually discover the village while touring the gorges.

Explore Trigance

France This Way review: Trigance is a small village, very pleasant to explore and about halfway around your tour of the Gorges du Verdon so a useful place to get out of your car and enjoy a picnic and take a stroll as well as enjoying lovely views across the countryside

Pretty street in Trigance

There is a parking area at the entrance to the village, where you will also find information boards explaining the highlights in Trigance.

You enter the historic centre through a stone gateway, next to the traditional lavoir. There are a surprising number if sights of interest for such a small village, and you will see all of these if you follow a circular circuit that starts by keeping south along Rue de la Portail and Rue de la Bote until you reach the church, then returns along Rue de l'Horloge and Rue du Puits. Along the way you will see lots of pretty little stone houses.

The church of Saint-Michel in Trigance  has its origins in the 12th century, and was greatly enlarged in the 17th century when the population of the village increased substantially. An interesting feature of the church is its belltower, that has a roof covered with brightly coloured tiles.

The castle built into the rock that you can see above the village was constructed in the 10th century by monks from the Abbey of Saint-Victor of Marseille. For several centuries the castle was home to two different families of local lords, and has been a hotel and restaurant for more than 50 years (see Chateau de Trigance hotel if you are looking for lovely accommodation in the region!).

A little further through Trigance and you will notice the clocktower, with a traditional iron campanile, before reaching Place Giraud with the Fontaine Giraud. Keeping north along Rue du Puits you can see a small well and a stone cistern.

Returning towards the car park, at the west end of the village you will notice the small Chapel Saint-Roch. This chapel was built in the first part of the 17th century, principally so the villagers could ask Saint-Roch to protect Trigance against the Black Death.
