Realville is a small village in the Tarn-et-Garonne department in the Midi-Pyrenees. It is close to Bruniquel with its two castles and the lovely town of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val.

Explore Realville

France This Way review: although there are no major sites to see at Realville the architecture is attractive and there are some interesting pigeonniers to look out for.

Realville is a quiet bastide village with a pleasant main square surrounded by arcaded buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries. The houses are mainly in brick or colombage, quite an interesting comparison with the bastides further north in the Lot-et-Garonne department which tend to be a mix of stone and colombage.

The centre of the village, around the Place des Arcades, is where you can see the most interesting medieval buildings with a lovely mix: some are supported on stone or brick columns and some on wood pillars, some have brick facades and others have colombage facades.

As a consequence the entire square and the facades of the buildings is now a listed historic monument.

Realville suffered during the 'Hundred Years War' and the wars of Religion but prosperity returned in the 17th and 18th century and some of the 18th century buildings built during this period were based on the buildings around the main square of Montauban.

With the arrival of prosperity, numerous pigeonniers were built in the countryside and mills along the river.

As well as the main square three other buildings in and around the village are listed historic monuments: the Chateau de Lastours from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries; one of the pigeonniers; and the buildings comprising the 'Domaine de Contines de Las Barros'. All three are private property.

A couple of kilometers from Realville is the village of Notre Dame des Miseres which has a chapel with a beautiful two-storey octagonal belltower.  The church was built in the 16th century and is a classified Historic Monument.

The capital of the Tarn-et-Garonne department of Montauban is just 15 kilometres from Realville. Its arcades are built in the same lovely pink brick as Toulouse and you can see the buildings which insprired some of those in Realville.

The 'most beautiful village' of Bruniquel is 16 kilometres away and here you can admire the pretty village dominated by its two castles.

You can find more travel ideas in the Tarn-et-Garonne guide and the Midi-Pyrenees guide.
