France This Way review: although it is a small village, Espeyrac has some lovely buildings and you will enjoy a wander along the streets of the village
Espeyrac is situated in a natural valley of Aveyron, surrounded by hills covered in fields and forests of chestnut trees and on the route of one of the main pilgrim paths that lead to Santiago de Compostela.
The principal monument in the village is the Church of Saint-Peter of Espeyrac. Although not particularly noteworthy in terms of architecture, it is an attractive stone church with a stone tower feauring open arches and a steep slate roofed steeple.
Next to the church is a very lovely house dominated by a beautiful, tall slate roof and two chimneys. From here you can stroll around the streets behind the church, to see an interesting selection of houses, with the occasional colombage house among the predominantly stone architecture.
You will notice various small characteristics of interest in the streets of Espeyrac, such as a small stone fountain, and a small tower on the side of one of the houses.
You can see another interesting religious relic on the edge of the village next to the bridge, the Cross of Espeyrac, which is very old and very eroded but appears to represent a character in the shape of a cross, or Jesus on the cross.
You will see other crosses and religious monuments if you follow one of the trails that can be explored around Espeyrac, including walking part of the GR65, the pilgrim path, as well as being able to prifit from the charming scenery.
Although facilities are very limited in the village, you will find a small 'general store' for your basic needs.
