France This Way review: Ota is a small village with limited commerces, in a beautiful location with several interesting natural highlights nearby

Although Ota is a small village with limited attractions to detain visitors, most visitors to this region of Corsica will find themselves in or near Ota at some point during their visit.

Mountains behind village of Ota in Corsica

In the village, there are two principal streets: the main road through the centre of the village, and a second road called Capo Sottano a short distance to the south, and if you walk along these two roads you will have seen most of the centre of the village.

The main sites of interest in Ota village are the church of Saint-John the Baptist, a small traditional painted church with a belltower that was built in the 18th century to replace an earlier church ; and the town hall with a war memorial and palm trees in front of the building.

There are two small cafes / restaurants in Ota and a general store where you can find basic provisions.

The most remarkable feature of Ota is however the landscape that surrounds the village. Wherever you are in the village you can see the imposing hills and cliffs that tower over the village, principally the hill called "Monte Capu d’Ota". These make the village very beautiful as well as providing many leisure options such as hiking and cycling.

There are two historic bridges on the Porto river close to the village: the Pont de Pinello (now partly in ruins); and the Genoese Pont de Pianella, a very pretty humpback bridge across the river that was built in the 15th century.

Attractions nearby

On the coast to the west of Ota you can visit a small village called Porto, which is still part of the commune of Ota. In Porto there is a very small historic centre, a port and a beach in the beautiful surroundings of the red cliffs along the coast in south-west Corsica.

From here you can access the Calanques de Piana, a very attractive coastline of red rocks and cliffs above the blue waters of the Mediterranean.

To the east of Ota you can take the footpath towards Evisa that follows the Gorges de Spelunca, another chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the region.
