Evisa is a small village in the west of Corsica, about halfway between Calvi (to the north) and Ajaccio (to the south), in the Deux-Sevi Valley and in the heart of the Aitone Forest. The village is at an altitude of 850 metres.

It is this forest that generates much of the wealth of the region - chestnuts are an important crop for the town.

France This Way review: Evisa is only a small village but the surrounding countryside and natural beauty ensure it is a popular destination with visitors to Corsica

Panorama of Evisa with church and mountains

Although it is small, Evisa has most basic commerces such as a bakery, a small general store and a small choice of bars and restaurants so it is a good place for a break when you are exploring the scenery in the surrounding area.

The architecture in the village is very typical of hill villages in Corsica with many houses built of granite, and almost every street in Evisa has far-reaching views across the valley to the mountains beyond!

The principal historic monument here is the Church of Saint-Martin with a belltower that dominates most views of the village. The church was built in the 17th century but modifications and additions in the 18th and 19th centuries have substantially altered the original appearance of the church.

As you explore Evisa you will be equally fascinated by the small fountains and bread ovens that you discover, the small granite houses and the many dry stone walls. The principal fountain is in the centre of Evisa and has the bust of a local dignitary on a pink granite pedestal.

One of the most charming attractions at Evisa is the Pont de Zaglia, a traditional humpback bridge built by the Genoese to cross the Tavulella river. The bridge is in a charming position surrounded by woodland - but has no handrails so keep an eye on your children!
