The Fondation Maeght is an art gallery and exhibition area on the hill above Saint-Paul-de-Vence, itself situated in the southern part of the Alps-Maritimes department of Provence, inland from Cannes and Nice.

Established in the 1960's, the Fondation Maeght is a modernist style museum in a lovely woodland setting with far reaching views. It attracts more than 200,000 visitors a year and is known as being one of the finest modern art museums in France.

France This Way review: the Fondation Maeght is a very interesting place to visit and highly recommended if you are an art enthusiast visiting the region (although I thought the admission charge - see visitor details below was a bit high).

Above all the Fondation Maeght is known for its extensive collections of Giacometti and Miro sculptures - the latter are mostly large works displayed in the terraced gardens.

Various works by other artists can also be seen, with paintings, drawings and sculptures, also exhibits showing how the artists worked. See the photo gallery below for examples.

The Maeght building itself is also interesting and attractive, with a whitewashed modern style and quarter-circle roofs to allow diffused light to enter the galleries, that integrates very harmoniously in the natural environment.

There is a shop within the Fondation Maeght selling prints and books as well as limited edition lithographs signed by the artists and prices from about 100 euros to about 8000 euros for a signed Miro lithograph, Bring your wallet!

You can see some of the highlights in the photo gallery below.
