Place Edouard VII and the Square de l’Opéra-Louis Jouvet are small squares in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, close to the Opera Garnier. The two squares are connected by a short passage.

France This Way review: although these squares are not well known, because they are not on the course of a large boulevard, they are very picturesque and you should take the small detour to see them both as you explore the Grands Boulevards area around the Palais Garnier.

Place Edouard VII

Despite appearances, this Place was constructed later than the Haussmann buildings that are more common in this area of Paris - it was constructed at the beginning of the 20th century.

The square was specifically designed to be even more resplendent than the Haussmann buildings. I am not sure it has achieved that goal, but the buildings are impressive, with arcades around the square at ground level, now partly transformed into restaurants, and impressive stone houses all around the small square.

The square takes its name from the British King Edward VII who had died in 1910, shortly before the square was built. The equestrian statue in the centre of the square is of King Edward VII on a horse.

The most important of the buildings is the Theatre King Edward VII which opened here in 1916.

Note that the Hotel Edward VII, which was created from the house where Edward VII lived in Paris, is not in this square but is a short distance to the south, on the Boulevard de l'Opéra.

Square de l’Opéra-Louis Jouvet

As with the Place Edward VII, this square was also designed and built at the beginning of the 20th century. The buildings here are perhaps slightly less remarkable but include several that are important, such as the Athena Theatre.

This square is more like a wide area of road than an enclosed square, and like the Place George VII has a statue in its centre. This statue depicts The Poet riding Pegasus (Le Poète chevauchant Pégase). Pegasus was a divine winged horse in Greek mythology.

The square takes its name from the Opera, which is very close to here, and from an actor from the first half of the 20th century called Louis Jouvet who was also the director of the Athena Theatre in this square.

Getting here

The squares are only a few hundred metres from Opera Garnier so you are likely to find yourself nearby as you explore Paris. To reach the squares follow Rue Edouard VII from the Boulevard des Capucins, or the road called Square de l’Opéra-Louis Jouvet from the Rue Boudreau.

The closest metro stations to Place Edouard VII and Square de l’Opéra-Louis Jouvet are at Opéra (lines 3, 7 and 8) and Madeleine (lines 8,12 and 14).

Attractions nearby

We recommend you take a guided tour of the Paris Opera while you are here - it is a quite remarkable building. The Eglise de la Madeleine is also nearby, and a remarkable church built in the style of a Greek temple.
