The small village of Oppedette is situated to the south of Simiane-la-Rotonde and north-east of Apt, and towards the south-east of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department of Provence.

Exploring Oppedette

France This Way review: it is usually for the 'Gorges d'Oppedette', also known as the 'Gorges du Calavon', and the scenic surroundings that most visitors come to the village but Oppedette itself is a charming village so even if you aren't here for hiking if you are in the vicinity you should visit for a stroll around the village and a look along the gorges from the viewpoint.

Oppedette village

Oppedette is a small but very pleasant traditional village to explore, and deserves a visit if you are in the region even if you are not here to explore the Gorges d'Oppedette. You can reach the village along the D201 or you can also stroll down a footpath into Oppedette from the car park at the main belvedere for the Gorges d'Oppedette.

Flower covered cafe in Oppedette village

The village is high on a rocky hillside above the Calavon river, and consists of a few narrow roads and alleys winding up between the charming stone houses.

The path passes the small Church of Saint-Didier (built in the 19th century) and a few other minor highlights of interest along the way, although really it is simply the village itself and its pretty setting that is the main attraction.

There is also a small cafe in Oppedette, although it was closed when we visited so perhaps it opens in the summer only? All in all very impressive for a village which apparently has less than 60 inhabitants!

Gorges d'Oppedette

The Calavon river has carved a very impressive series of gorges next to the village, with the the main canyon about 2.5 kilometres long and up to 150 metres deep. Along a pleasant path from the village there is a belvedere (viewpoint) that looks out across the end of the gorges, and gives an impressive introduction to their scenic grandeur.

If you have time we highly recommend you to follow one of the marked trails through the gorges - you can choose whether to walk along the top of the gorges or in the valley next to the river, and there are trails of varying length and difficulty.  One of the most popular walks is around seven kilometres long and follows around the top of the gorges. Allow around 3 hours.

You will also see the gorges if you are following one of the long distance footpaths that follow the Calavon river, either the GR4 or GR6.

See hiking the Gorges d'Oppedette for more information.
