Wimereux is a quiet seaside town on the north coast of France between Boulogne-sur-Mer and Calais. It enjoyed a period of growth at the end of the 19th century / beginning of the 20th century coinciding with the craze for Belle Epoque style houses. Consequently Wimereux has a good selection of these stylish villas.

Explore Wimereux

The sea front at Wimereux retains some of the flavour of the Belle Epoque period with its colourful sea front villas and charming blue and white painted beach huts.

The sea front promenade known as the 'Digue' has many restaurants overlooking the sea and is a lovely place for an evening promenade. Along the sea front there are a good selection of bars and restaurants and on the beach itself sand-yachting and kite-flying add to the traditional selection of beach activities.

Other popular sports in Wimereux are golf, with the golf course having a spectacular view of the white cliffs on the opposite side of the channel, and Wimereux has a good sailing school.

There is also a walk on the Dunes de la Slack: the walk runs along the dunes and has lovely sea views. To find the start of the walk park at the Pointe aux Oies or the parking des Allemands.

The Belle Epoque villas are one of the key attractions to the town and most were originally built as second homes for wealthy residents of Paris and Lille. Now the town has become a popular home to people working in nearby Boulogne-sur-Mer and is also popular with British and Belgians buying holiday homes or settling in France.

One of the villas in particular is worth looking out for, this is the villa 'Les Mauriciens' which is classified as a historic monument and has a remarkable roof and facade.

Places to Visit Nearby

The Cap Gris-Nez and Cap Blanc-Nez are both classified as 'Grand Sites de France' for their natural beauty and are close to Wimereux on the Cote d'Opale. This part of the coast has many interesting war museums and there is a war graves cemetery nearby too.

If you would like a change from looking at the sea you can go inland to the town of Wimille and visit a working water mill.

At nearby Boulogne sur Mer you can visit the very interesting Nausicaa sea life centre. This is now one of France's top attractions and is also a great place to go with children.

Le Touquet is one of our favourite seaside places in France and inland of there Montreuil is a very attractive town surrounded by large stone ramparts. Both are well worth a trip during your stay at Wimereux.
