Porticcio is a beach resort on the coast of south-west Corsica, a short distance south-east of Ajaccio.

Visiting Porticcio

The resort of Porticcio is popular with visitors to Corsica because of its long sandy beach, numerous restaurants and other shops and services just behind the beach, and its easy accessibility from Ajaccio.

To avoid the need to drive here it is also possible to take a boat trip to Ajaccio direct from Porticcio. This also of course allows you to easily visit that town, which is a large and interesting place with lots to enjoy.

The resort of Porticcio is clean and modern, and accommodation is available here that is often cheaper than the better known resorts in Corsica. However, you should be aware that Porticcio lacks a historic centre to give it character, and is not very close to the well known attractions of the island. As a result it is perhaps a suitable destination if your main requirement is to spend a few days in the Corsican sunshine, but less so if you want to enjoy the magnificent scenery and beaches that have made Corsica famous.

Porticcio beaches

There are several beaches in the town. The main beach is the long, sandy beach called the Plage de la Viva: this is a lively beach with many activities available and many visitors never get any further!

Another extensive beach is the Plage d'Agosta a short distance to the south, which is also long and sandy and has parking available.

If you are adventurous, and don't mind walking a certain distance, there are several other beaches between these main beaches: driving along the road you will think the coast is completely impossible to access here due to the number of houses and hotels, but the beaches are still to be found even if it takes a certain effort! One example is the group of beaches on the headland between the Pointe de Porticcio and the Pointe de Vescu.

Attractions nearby

The large town of Ajaccio is the most important destination from Porticcio: see the Ajaccio guide for details. To the west of Ajaccio you can also visit the lovely scenery of the Iles-Sanguinaires and Capo-di-Feno. Highly recommended and not very far from Porticcio, but unfortunately your route needs to go around the airport and through Ajaccio town centre so takes rather longer than you might expect.

Heading south from Porticcio, the winding coast road can also take you to Filitosa. This prehistoric site is in a lovely countryside setting and is one of the rare places in the world where prehistoric engraved stones can be seen.
