France This Way review: Neuvic is a quiet town and not really a tourist town but it has an impressive chateau which can be visited in the summer.

Chateau de Neuvic

Neuvic sur l'Isle is a quiet town whose main high street is dominated by the church with its tall, narrow bell-tower. The church was constucted in the 12th and 13th centuries in Romanesque style but has been substantially altered in later years first with Gothic additions and then with major changes in the late 19th century.

Some parts of the interior still have painted walls which were common in churches at one time when they were much more colourful than we are used to seeing.

Neuvic has a small selection of shops, bars and restaurants and it has a weekly market but its main sight is the Chateau de Neuvic situated on the edge of town next to the river Lisle.

The Chateau de Neuvic was built in Renaissance style in the 16th century. Guided visits can be taken in July and August from Tuesday to Sunday at 15.30 and 17.00. During these visits you can see the Renaissance vaulted rooms, wall paintings and a rare three-level stone sink.

The surrounding park contains interesting trees and shrubs and various shrub borders have been created but it is left a bit on the wild side. Visits to the park are free outside of July and August and is open from 10.00 to 12.00 and from 14.00 to 19.00 from April to October.

The chateau is also home to a restaurant with a terrace on the edge of the river.

On the edge of the village two small houses have been created in the original half-timber style that was once the main method of building houses in this area which does not have a supply of natural stone.

The main house is a copy of one in the nearby village of Saint Michel de Double. The houses are kept open and inside you can see how they would have been laid out to accommodate the animals and there is a copy of a traditional bread oven.

Take a small detour from here over the River Le Vern and on to the small river beach. Park here and walk to the left where there is a small lock. If you cross over the lock you can see pretty views over the river Isle to the Chateau de Mauriac.

Neuvic is known for its local caviar and you can visit the local sturgeon fish farm and see how the sturgeon are farmed and feed the fish and sample the produce. There is also a local walnut oil mill that you can visit and sample the local walnut oil.

The pleasant town of Saint Astier with its charming riverside location is nearby as is the market town of Mussidan. One of our favourite towns in the Dordogne is Perigueux which has a beautiful medieval centre.
