The town of Mons is located in the 'Pays de Fayence' region of Provence, west of Grasse and north of Saint-Raphael (on the Cote d'Azur).
A little further north than the other 'Pays de Fayence villages such as Seillans and Montauroux, the road north towards Mons passes through a change in scenery from the more tree covered villages facing the Mediterranean to the more barren, rockier (equally beautiful) landscapes in the interior of the Var department.
Explore Mons
France This Way review: despite its slightly remote location, a visit to Mons is highly recommended if you are in this part of Provence - and you will possibly be the only tourist here when you visit, which doesn't happen very often in pretty Provencal villages!
Note that there are lots of places called Mons in France, so if you are using the GPS in your car to get here make sure you have chosen Mons in the Var department!
As soon as the town comes in sight, spread out along a rocky spur, you know you are somewhere special, and exploring Mons itself only proves you right - it is a lovely small town, quieter than many in the region and with lots of small highlights to discover.
Entering from the north, there are a small amount of ruins from a castle that once stood here, along with a fountain and a 14th century lavoir, then a series of very picturesque streets and connecting alleys that run the length of the village.
Some of the streets have medieval arcades across them; there is a Church (the Church of Notre Dame de l'Assomption); the Chapel des Penitents; a fountain or two; and a couple of cafes to stop and rest a while.
Mons is at an altitude over 800 metres above sea level, so there are amazing views from the open area at the southern end of the town - on a clear day you can see as far as Corsica (or so they say, I couldn't see Corsica but perhaps my eye sight is not good enough...)
Attractions nearby
Just outside the village at Rochetaillée you can still see the remains of a Roman aqueduct.
If you want to see more of the countryside of the region around Mons, and a few of the dolmen that are found nearby, there is an 18 kilometre long marked trail that departs from Mons - see the Mons Tourist Information or the noticeboard outside the Mairie for details.
Other villages in the Pays de Fayence region such as Seillans and Montauroux are also pleasant to explore.
You can find more travel ideas in the Var guide and the Provence guide.
