Lescun is a small village towards the southern end of the valley of the Aspe river (the gave d'Aspe) in the Béarnaise Pyrénées of south-west France.

Explorez Lescun et le cirque de Lescun

France This Way reviewaire: the village of Lescun is very small - just a cluster of a few houses - but visitors come here for the beautiful scenery of the western Pyréneées, in particular the cirque de Lescun

To reach Lescun, follow the Gave d'Aspe south from Oloron-Sainte-Marie for about 35 kilometres, then turn right on the small road that leads to Lescun village. On its way to the village this road also takes you from the bottom of the valley and up the side of a steep hill.

Lescun village

Lescun village

Lescun village is an attractive small village, with a small centre around a war memorial, with a cafe and a shop for basic provisions - useful if you are a hiker passing through the western Pyrénées.

Otherwise there is not much in the village: perhaps 10 - 20 houses along two or three small roads. Visitors are not usually here to explore the village, but because of the hikes and scenery that are in close proximity to Lescun...

Cirque de Lescun and scenic attractions

One of the most important long distannce footpaths in France, the GR10, passes throgh Lescun and as a result many hikers pass through the village. Visitors will often follow part of this footpath when exploring nearby highlights such as the Cirque de Lescun

- There is a "ring" of mountains to the west of Lescun that includes several high peaks such as le Billare, la Table des Tois Rois, the aiguilles d’Ansabère and the pic d’Anie: together this scenic spectacle is called the Cirque de Lescun.

- A short distance from here, the Plateau de Sanchèse is another beautiful destination, where you will see mountain scenery, cows and horses, unusual flowers - and an impressive waterfall tumbling down a cliff

Several other footpaths start in the west part of Lescun (follow the Chemin des Trabès west from the centre of the villlage for the start of several footpaths) and other popular trails including the GR10 route to the Col de Barrancq and to Borce start from the "parking d'Aumet" - follow the road along the valley of the Labadie river south from Lhers to reach this parking area.

The valley of the gave d'Aspe is the main route providing access to this region of the Pyrenees. The principal village in the valley is Sarrance which is larger than Lescun but still small. For a large range of shops and restaurants you will need to continue to Oloron-Sainte-Marie, where you you can also see a 12th century cathedral and a pretty view of the houses along the riverside.

If you are continuing east from Lescun towards the pyrenees you can take the road from Escut in the valley of the Aspe that continues to Bielle in the valley of the Ossau river, from where roads continue into the higher mountains.
