La Forêt-Fouesnant

La Forêt Fouesnant is built up along the side of its old port. The old port was once called the Port of Stank El Lestreg and welcomed around a hundred ships a year with various goods including sand, wood and grain. It also had an important sardine and mackerel fleet.

On the left bank of the inlet is a large 18th century mansion which is now used as the clubhouse for the La Forêt golf course, called the Golf de Cornouaille.

In the village the church of Notre Dame d'Izel-Vor dates back to the 16th century. It is built of granite and is gothic in style. Inside it has a wood and granite baptism font, some polychrome statues and a high altar with a highly decorated reredos.

Also in the centre are a couple of bars and restaurants and a few shops.

La Forêt-Fouesnant has a large sandy beach, more than a kilometer long called the plage de Kerleven. It is possible to organise kayaking, windsurfing, paddleboarding and other water-based activities.

La Forêt Fouesnant is one of the towns of Brittany which suffers from green algae and every year three to four thousand tonnes have to be collected and removed from its beaches.

Port la Forêt

On the same side of the inlet as the golf course is the marina which was built in the early 1970s. It is the third largest on the southern Brittany coast.

As well as being a fishing and a leisure port, Port la Forêt is an important offshore racing centre. It welcomes many of the big names of sailing and it is a training centre for races such as the Vendée Globe.

The port is very protected and has facilities for repairs as well as for holidaymakers.

There are also daily boat trips to the Iles Glenan in July and August and a reduced service at other times of the year.

There is an evening market every Tuesday in July and August.
