Planting began in the Jardins de Roquelin in a field next to the family farmhouse. The garden now covers an area of one hectare and is primarily a rose garden with a wide variety of old roses and more modern repeat flowering varieties.
The wide borders are also home to lots of trees to provide shade and structure and lots of varieties of shrubs and perennials to provide interest. You will see though that roses are the main passion in this garden and so best to visit in late spring when the most roses are in flower.
All in all four hundred and fifty varieties of roses have been planted and the shapes, colours and scent are lovely. Tea roses, Rugosa, Alba, Bourbon, Gallic and Damascus roses are all represented and most are labeled so that you can buy the same plant in the adjoining nursery or remember it for future planting schemes.
The borders have been laid out in English garden style with wide borders and grassy paths and there are chairs and benches scattered around so that you can sit and enjoy the view and the scent.
The garden has been laid out to a plan which includes a parterre garden - laid out in formal squares, an ornamental vegetable garden, again laid out in squares. There is also a pond, a Mediterranean garden with lots of lavender and another area with triangles of santolina.
At the exit to the garden there is a plant shop where you can buy many of the plants in the garden and especially the roses.
The shop also sells a variety of different jams and marmalades and other home made products.
The Jardin de Roquelin is open from the end of April to the begining of October from 10.00-18.00 hours every day except Tuesday.
