Explore Brem-sur-Mer
France This Way review: there is not a great deal to see in Brem-sur-Mer apart from the beach, but if you are staying in one of the campsites here there are a couple of places of interest to visit during your stay
Visits to Brem-sur-Mer will be centred along the beach, which is long and sandy with occasional rocky parts to explore. Although it seems like one long beach there are three separate named parts to the beach:
- Plage des Dunes, the long straight beach closest to the village centre
- Plage de la Normandelière, the northernmost section of the beach, backed by marshes
- Plage de Sauveterre, at the southern end of the beach and backed by the forests of the Dominial Forest of Olonne.
Attractions in Brem-sur-Mer
In the centre of Brem-sur-Mer there is a church, the town hall and a small number of shops and cafes. Sites of interest in the surrounding area include:
- The village of La Gachère is a small traditional fishing village (fishing no longer takes place here) on the southern edge of Brem at the meeting point of the Auzance and Vertonnne rivers with white houses surrounded by marshes. It is hard to imagine now but until the 19th century this was a busy port village.
- The Church Saint Nicholas of Brem dates from the 11th century, making it one of the oldest churches in Vendée, although much of what we see today is a result of later reconstruction after damage caused during the Wars of Religion. The nave and the apse are the oldest parts of the church.
- In the centre of Brem-sur-Mer you can take a stroll through the Park de Gênets
