Mary, our whole family would agree with you - ignore my grumbles, La Rochelle is now one of our firm favourites and we will certainly return there sooner rather than later.

we found the town beach to be pretty pleasant and perfect to get to by bike on a hot day when you don't want to be exerting yourself too much. Also nice bike ride from La Rochelle to Les Minimes along the bike paths. Lovely and relaxed. We absolutely adored La Rochelle.

Thanks for the suggestions Jon, hopefully we will be able to try one of them this week. Should be better than our first sortie (see next entry)
Cheers

For a family day out the aquarium is good (but choose a sunny day or it gets crowded). For restaurants, André is excellent (and could be very, very close to you) or "Le Boute en Train" on Rue des Bonnes Femmes, just behing the market and opposite the only "adult" shop in Poitou-Charantes, is my personal favourite.

Have fun.
