No socks for Christmas
I’m sorry to report that I have discovered a major disadvantage of being an expat in France.
Since no-one ever has a clue what to buy me for birthdays and christmas I quite often get sent amazon gift vouchers, usually for amazon UK. This is always very exciting - the chance to go shopping without leaving the house is very good news. But this time there was a disappointment in store for me.
It is always a challenge to choose books, DVDs, CDs etc because I’m so far out of touch with what is popular, so I was pretty excited to see that amazon have widened their range to include all kinds of things - clothes, televisions and so on. My gift voucher not running to a blue-ray DVD player, I thought I’d check out the clothes. Socks to be exact.
You can’t beat a nice pair of socks, I always say. Mostly because of the number of jumpers I’ve been sent that don’t fit - you’re safe with socks. I was going to say ‘I like safe socks’, but I won’t, it’s a bit too risque for a public blog.
After happy hours browsing the hundreds of possibilities, I settled on this pair. Perfect for cycling don’t you think, and very Piet Mondrian. I can happily picture myself putting my cycling shoes on as slowly as possible while the other cyclists admired my new socks.
But then the terrible disappointment. These socks can not be delivered to France! Amazon will deliver most things to France but for some reason my socks have to stay in the UK. So either I do without, or I get them sent to a UK address, and then ask some kindly relative to send them on to me. Or I move back to the UK. Bah humbug!
If you want to get me really jealous, and you live in the UK, you can buy them for all your loved ones this Christmas at lovely colourful Socks from amazon but only if you live in the UK.
I started to write ‘Still, I mustn’t grumble, I got the flat-screen TV I wanted for my birthday’, and I headed off to amazon to find a picture I could show off with and make you all jealous. Yes they do sell it, yes all the reviews are great, and yes it’s at a great price. In fact, a much better price than we paid for it two weeks ago in France. Yes, this time they do deliver to France.
Why will they ship a TV but not a pair of socks I wonder?
So now I’m in a really bad mood, and you’re not getting a picture of my TV - you can see it at this amazon TV is a lot cheaper than we paid for the same model in france if you like. By the way, UK televisions didn’t use to work in France, perhaps they do now, check before importing one!.
My daughter has just looked over my shoulder and asked if my blog is always about socks, so within half an hour she will be telling everyone at school that my job is to write about socks on the internet. That should impress them.
