Holiday in the sun

The sun has troubled itself to make another of its rare appearances today – not quite sun-tanning weather but at least I can leave my bobble hat in the house when I go outside now. Meanwhile Mrs B has been hinting about holidays again, which always causes a bit of friction in the house, and the children have taken to dangling over the swimming pool, poking the icebergs and asking when they can go for a swim.

OK I’m exagerrating slightly – and people have actually been swimming in the pool – but there’s more to life than France, as the girls persist in telling me – so I’ve been taking a look around at the options. On the hush-hush, you understand, I don’t want false hopes to be raised. But a bit of tropical paradise might not be a bad idea.

I found a groovy looking site called otbeach.com (as in ‘On The Beach’) which seems quite promising because they have (a) lots of holidays on the beach (b) their focus is on cheap holidays . These meet two of the important criteria for Mrs B and the girls (‘holiday’ and ‘beach’) and one of mine (‘cheap’). But that leaves me with a problem.

I don’t much like sand and beaches, and I don’t really go for sunshine unless it’s filtered through a bit of cloud first. I like city breaks and mountain tops. And three out of four of us having a good time is just not good enough, especially when I am the fourth.

Now you wouldn’t be the first to tell me that I’m just trying to spoil the fun for everyone else, because EVERYONE likes sun, sea and beaches. And in truth more or less everyone else I can think of does seem to. So, can I help being different? You all go play in the sunshine, I’ll be OK in the hotel room with an internet connection and a bottle of the local wine, and I’ll join you outside after sunset.

Anyway, net result is, any travel plans have to be put on hold until either the rest of them agree that a trek to Everest base camp would be fun, or I become so old and confused that they can stick me on a beach and tell me I’m in a Gallery of Modern Art. Probably not long to wait then.
