French sites

Get ready for a long afternoon, you’ve got a lot of reading ahead of you.

France this way can’t cover all aspects of France and French life from all angles, so to give you a bit of variety I thought I’d list some other French sites that I like to think complement our own. Their owners will perhaps disagree or be insulted by the comparison but I won’t let that stop me.

Take a look through some of these sites, then if you know of some other good French websites post them below and I’ll add them (as long as they aren’t our direct competition…) – France wide and general interest sites and blogs only for the moment, I’ll perhaps do a list of French expat blogs in a week or two.

thisfrenchlife.com – Perhaps the best known of the French blogs among expats, Craig McGinty keeps everyone up to date with news, opinions and general bits of information about what is going on in France and in the news, with very frequent posts. The site covers a wide range of subjects, with entries written in an ‘easy to read, easy to follow’ style, and there’s usually something to grab your atention.

whytraveltofrance.com another site that manages to track down interesting and newsworthy stories and present them in an interesting, well-written way. The stories are often offbeat or ones you might not come across elsewhere – amusing French TV commercials etc

jon doust in the telegraph a quality blog mixing interesting factual posts based on recent news items with more general chatty/personal type entries

connexionfrance.com I know about this site because we seem to keep getting free copies of their English language newspaper. The newspaper (and the site) have lots of up to date useful information, mainly focussed on the expat comunity and often concerned with changes in legislation etc

frenchproperty.com guides to France a great resource for articles about the many bureaucratic obstacles that arise in France – pensions, health cover, building a house etc. The articles are well written and up to date.

Charles Bremner, Times correspondent in France – added as recommended in comments below (thanks!) – it looks very interesting. I wish I had more time to spend reading other people’s blogs!

Great list of websites on French life which kept me reading for hours. In your next list don’t forget Charles Bremner from the Times Newspaper (UK). He’s a bit like Jon Doust but Paris based (although he does holiday elsewhere in France). Well worth looking at if you haven’t come across him before. Please keep blogging, it’s great to hear about day to day life from someone with kids who is actually living in France and enjoying it (even if it’s exasperating somtimes….) Keep smiling.
