France web 2.0 – one big happy community

See that gizmo in the right-hand column? That is a new groovy ‘web 2.0′ idea from google to bring social networking to the masses.

No longer do you need to dash off to facebook or mybloglog to join communities – now you can do it in the comfort of your own favourite websites.

Now I’d probably know better how to use it if I knew more about social networking instead of being a solitary-loner type, but the way it is supposed to work is that all and sundry – the more the merrier – can join a ‘community’ and get a little picture and details shown in that box.

Pretty exciting? Well, the details for all members of the community listed will include their own blog or site, and other sites that they ‘belong’ to – so visitors to one site can see and visit the favourite sites of other people in the same community…and so on ad infinitum.

Or until bedtime if that arrives first.

Hence we end up with an enormous community of like-minded individuals, all finding new and exciting websites to enjoy – having a chance to leave comments etc (see also our talk about France page) and generally using the internet like a great big playground.

Where will it end if every website is a mini-facebook? Who knows, but the idea is pretty decent…I think. If it doesn’t work out this post and the gizmo will of course disappear into cyberspace in a couple of weeks time never to be seen again.

But meanwhile, sign-up or sign-in and we’ll see how it goes. Or doesn’t. I’ve got a whole range of little ‘chat boxes’ I can add if the idea seems popular.

And if I’ve completely misunderstood the whole ‘friends connect’ idea don’t hesitate to put me right.

Note: web 2.0 is a buzz-word used to describe the future internet as a great swarming interactive community rather than as a one-way ‘information provider’. I know, the description web 2 is already out of date and people have started talking about web 3.0, whatever that may be, but I am doing my best to keep up.

I’m a bit new to all this internet networking too, but I really like the “France this Way” site so delighted to join the community. I love France, visit at least once annually, and hope to spend some time there when I retire (which may not be too far away, considering the situation with financial services in Edinburgh – my current place of work!) What a great website! Will definitely be visiting regularly in the future. .. and at last an opportunity to use my google profile :)

We have had the good luck to live in the Haute Savoie since April 08 and started our version of the web 2.0 thing with a blog for friends and family. .. and yes the “renovation project” is on the to do list.

Looking forward to meeting more here.
