French people are brought up from an early age to take what they want/need and give the rest to friends/family or sell it. If you cannot sell your excess produce, give it to your neighbours or to your local Resto de Coeur (Restaurant for the Homeless - Literally Restaurant of Heart). The French sense of community is often much stronger than the English. Wastage is a sin that in rural areas can be treated with great contempt although, being French, you will likely be the last to know of it!
