Coming top in google

I keep an eye on how people reach this blog (and the whole site) and sometimes try and write entries that are related to what people are looking for. Not surprisingly most searches relate to France, French life and generally expat type things. This makes my job easier.

Occasionally they are about cycling, which is fine. That’s why the last entry was about average cycling speed – because I know that people are interested, as was I when I started cycling.

But I thought I’d share with you some of the less typical or less predictable searches from the last couple of days, so you can see the challenges I face:

  • How does Sarkozy relax
  • Worst circus for animals
  • People who eat pooh (eergghh, which of you searched on that!)
  • Living in france with a septic tank
  • Pruning pampas grass

Most strange of all, about a year ago I wrote about my previous life when I worked for a leading investment bank. Even now, every day, that post gets found by people searching on ‘working conditions at xxx bank’, ’salaries at xxx bank’ and so on. I won’t name them again here or this post will fall in the same trap! Suffice to say, I’m surprised that my throw away comments a year ago are still being found and read – next time I’ll be more careful what I say!

Between you and me when I wrote the post ‘tout devient possible‘ a few days ago about Sarkozy winning the French presidential elections, I chose the title carefully as an experiment. The phrase was the election slogan for Sarkozy, and apparently appears on 1.7 million different pages across the internet, and I wanted to see how this blog rated. Well, a week later there we are on page 1 in google for the phrase!

I can positively feel the power going to my fingertips as I type. So if you find that I drift away from ‘happy expat living in France’ type blog posts to ‘why don’t you book my lovely gites’ type posts or even better ‘the Rich Jerk shows you how to make millions on the internet with no effort at all‘ type posts you’ll understand why.

But I’m afraid I don’t know how Sarkozy relaxes – in truth I don’t think he does – so I can’t help you with that one.

  1. I have noo website yet. Just looking around for a way I could plug in. I wish I had your site. I really like it. I would just like to know if you’re making money from it. Ahh, but the French don’t talk about money do the?. Not sure about the English, but we Americans are hot on the topic. I wish to encourage you to continue with your elegant and entertaining blog.

  2. Ha ha no the French don’t like to talk about money – there are plenty of people around here with lots of money but they keep it secret!!
I’m English not French but I’m not saying if or how much I make from the site. I wish it was more, if that helps (that’s probably suitably American?)
    Good luck with your site!
