A car for christmas
Our poor old Renault Megane Scenic has now travelled about 170,000 kilometres. Despite Mrs B trying to leap across a ditch with it about four years ago, it is still going strong and looks set to continue for another 170,000.
But the children are starting to complain how embarrassing it is turning up at school in it and if truth be told, when we park in a car park our car is starting to stand out as the oldest, dirtiest car present.
Still, nobody feels a need to enviously scratch keys down the side, as happened recently to one of our neighbours with a posher car. And frankly even if they did we probably wouldn’t notice. We just aren’t car people.
All the same, I have asked for this car (the Audi R8) for Christmas. I’ve never been one for sports cars (although we had a very sexy yellow Fiat Coupe many years ago) but this new Audi would just suit me I think. I might need to get a pair of trendy sunglasses and a fashionable haircut to go with it, but I quite like the idea of cruising into town in this car, music blairing and me looking cool.
So I’ve done some calculations to try and justify the expense to Mrs B. The children of course need no convincing.
You know those ‘amazon’ ads that sometimes pop-up here and there on the site? well, each time someone buys something using one of these I make about 10p commission. Approximately three people a week buy a book, so I stand to make a clear £15 a year profit. That’s not quite enough, since it will take me approximately 7,500 years to save up.
So all I need to do is increase visitor numbers to the site, so I make more sales. If I can just increase from 10,000 visitors a day to 50,000,000 visitors each day, I will get my dream car in less than a year. Shouldn’t be too hard surely? So that is my challenge for 2008.
Meanwhile Mrs B has kindly found me a car that I can have much sooner, and while it doesn’t quite have the kerb appeal of the Audi above, the Citroen Ami does have a certain classic appeal that might just achieve the same ‘heads turning in the street’ effect.
And what’s even better, I should think I can get one second hand just by selling half a dozen copies of a cheap novel.
Now, do you think it comes in any other colours, and with a three year guarantee? I quite fancy a nice ferrari red…
(You can see more of the cars on our ‘how about this one instead’ list at French cars).
