Volvic
Found 14 km north of Clermont-Ferrand, Volvic is famous for two things:
1) The beautiful 'extinct volcano' scenery of the Chaine des Puys, and
2) Bottled water. Volvic mineral water is bottled in the town and sold all over the world, and has been for almost 70 years. You can visit the source of Volvic water and take a guided tour
In Volvic village, the sites include:
- the 'Maison de la Pierre' - a visit to the old quarries and rock-workings in the town (Volvic stone being held in almost as high repute as volvic water);
- the Chateau de Tournoel standing defensively over the entrance to the Parc des Volcans d'Auvergne;
- a 12th century church - the Church of Saint-Priest.
But it is of course the scenery that you also come to visit - the magnificent wooded slopes of the ancient volcanoes, craters intact, and so easily recognised. Perfect countryside for hiking and cycling and other outdoor activities.
