Visit Vogue, Rhone-Alpes
Vogue (correct French name Vogüé) is on the Ardeche river to the south-east of Aubenas. In addition to being listed as an Ardeche 'village of character' it is also a national 'most beautiful village'.
Explore Vogue
Enter the village by the 'temporary' bridge - constructed in 1890 - that is in the same position as a much earlier bridge.
Vogué is more substantial than many of the 'villages of character' so allow plenty of time to explore - there is a great deal to enjoy and discover in the village and even then you will have missed something, because every 20 metres you have to chose a different path through the labyrinth of alleys and stairways that runs through the village.
It is the chateau that dominates the village, and around which the village developed. The original 12th century castle has since (during the 16th century) been transformed into something more homely, with round tours in each corner but still holds centre stage in the village.
Around the castle in Vogué the numerous narrow streets have many highlights - the curved stone staircases with little doors underneath were among my favourites. There is also a small church and presbytery.
The little Place de la Gadabielle is interesting, not just for the attractive open-topped tower that is next to the square but for the sense of history - running up the hill from the Place is an old track, long time pathway for the mules carrying provisions to and from the plateau behind...stand quietly and you can almost hear the echoes of ancient footsteps...
Most of the sites of interest in Vogue are along a marked and numbered trail around the village, which also passes by the ancient wells, a mill and other notable features and is the best way to explore.
Various facilities are also available including one or two cafes. Canoe hire is also available in Vogue, just next to the bridge as it crosses the Ardeche at the entrance to the village.
I very much enjoyed visiting Vogué and highly recommend it if you are in the region.
Attractions nearby
There are several other very picturesque villages in the countryside around Vogue, with Labeaume and Balazuc among our personal favourites. Only a little further you can visit the exceptional scenery of the Gorges de l'Ardeche.
