Vaison la Romaine, Provence, a guide
Vaison-le-Romaine is found 30km north-east of Orange, in the Vaucluse department
The interesting town of Vaison-la-Romaine has a long and colourful history, stretching back beyond the Romans.
There are still significant roman remains to be seen in the town, especially of the roman baths and theatre, and the town is the largest archaeological site in Europe. centred around the Puymin area, the excavations have also uncovered significant remains of roman houses, streets etc., and much can be seen in the Puymin museum.
The old town itself is also very attractive, with lots of steep streets winding up the hill, and has good views from its hilltop location. The ruins of the castle, dating from 1195, perch at the top of the rock above the village itself.
The Notre-Dame cathedral and cloister is another highlight of Vaison-la-Romaine, as is the stone bridge across the river..
