Ungersheim
Ungersheim is north of Mulhouse in the Haut-Rhin department of the Alsace region. The town is known for its ecomuseum and its biosphere.
The ecomuseum of Ungersheim is a very substantial development, in which an impressive number of houses have been carefully restored to recreate a village as it was before industrialisation.
The largest ecomuseum in France, there are also accurate recreations of workshops, blacksmiths, farmlife, shops and life in the middle ages. Reenactments of life in the village add extra colour and interest to a visit.
A great deal of attention has been paid to detail, making it a very interesting site to visit and explore. The achievement is even more significant, because the houses, schol, townhall etc - 72 in total - were all in a state of ruin elsewhere and have been carefully taken down, brought to Ungersheim, and reconstructed and restored.
The other big attraction is the Biosphere of Ungersheim, with a focus on the interraction between man and the environment...and dinosaurs! The park starts with the world at the time of the meteorite that killed the dinosaurs, and looks at the importance of caring for the natural environment - all in an entertaining way, such as a '3D' film of the end of the dinosaur era.
Learning and education at the biosphere is carefully disguised as fun and gams, so everyone will enjoy it - and learn something!
