Visit Parfondeval (Picardy, France)

Parfondeval is a village in the east of the Aisne department (Picardy), north of Reims in north-east France, and in the historical Thierache region. In a very attractive setting of gentle rolling countryside, the village of Parfondeval is also classified as one of the 'most beautiful villages of France' (the only village with the award in the Aisne department).

Exploring Parfondeval

Parfondeval is in quite a remote location, far from most tourisr routes and a little lost in the countryside, but if you are in the region a visit is recommended.

The very small village centres around its fortified church, surrounded by attractive houses, also in the same red-brick and slate roofs, and is a lovely place that is a joy to discover.

The 16th century Church of Saint Menard (the clocktower was added later, in the 18th century) is the main highlight, unusual in being a fortified church - the church has defensive towers either side of the stone entrance, thick walls, and was originally also surrounded by a moat.

Inside the church there is a large hall where the population of the village could seek refuge when necessary by passing through a doorway from the adjacent house (the church was built during the reigns of Louis XIII and Louis XIV when highwaymen and bandits were a common threat to the security of a small village).

There is also a small museum in Parfondeval dedicated to agricultural tools from previous centuries.
