Nieul-sur-l'Autise

Nieul-sur-l'Autise is found at the southernmost edge of the Vendée region near the border with Poitou-Charentes (south of Vouvant)

It is the Saint Vincent Abbey which attracts visitors to the village - the abbey dates from the 11th century and is claimed to be one of the most intact abbey in France (although much of the building was restored during the 19th century).

The abbey has various attractive features - carvings, sculptures, arches etc - but it is (for me) the cloisters that are the highlight, with their great multi-columned pillars and calm reflective arcades.

Other sights of note in the village include the watermill, now a functioning watermill where you can watch flour being ground.

The remains of a neolithic camp are also to be found at Nieul-sur-l'Autise - Le Camp Durand - with defensive ditches dating back to prehistoric times.
