Visit Mons, Provence

The town of Mons is located in the 'Pays de Fayence' region of Provence, west of Grasse and north of Saint-Raphael (on the Cote d'Azur).

A little further north than the other 'Pays de Fayence villages (such as Seillans and Montauroux), the road north towards Mons passes through a change in scenery from the more tree covered villages facing the Mediterranean to the more barren, rockier (equally beautiful) landscapes in the interior of the Var department.

Exploring Mons

Despite its slightly more remote location, a visit to Mons is highly recommended if you are in this part of Provence. As soon as the town comes in sight, spread out along a rocky spur, you know you are somewhere special, and exploring Mons itself only proves you right - it is a lovely small town, quieter than many in the region and with lots of small highlights to discover.

Entering from the north, there are a small amount of ruins from a castle that once stood here, along with a fountain and a 14th century lavoir, then a series of very picturesque streets and connecting alleys that run the length of the village.

Some of the streets have medieval arcades across them; there is a Church (the Church of Notre Dame de l'Assomption); the Chapel des Penitents; a fountain or two; and a couple of cafes to stop and rest a while.

Mons is at an altitude over 800 metres above sea level, so there are also amazing views from the open area at the southern end of the town - on a clear day you can see as far as Corsica.

Attractions nearby

If you want to see more of the countryside of the region around Mons, and a few dolmen that are found nearby, there is an 18km long marked trail that departs from Mons - see the Mons Tourist Information or the noticeboard outside the Mairie for details.
