Chatillon-sur-Seine
The town of Chatillon-sur-Seine is in north-eastern Burgundy in the Cote d'Or department.
Chatillon itself is in peaceful countryside close to the source of the Seine (which can be visited a further 40km south), and is an attractive town, albeit with few major historical monuments. The source of the Douix is in the town, and there is a ruined castle and the church of St Vorles above, and the 17th century Hotel du Congres and Convent of the Cordeliers are among the other notable medieval buildings to admire.
But the town has a fascinating attraction - the Treasure of Vix. Discovered near to Chatillon-sur-Seine, the burial site of a princess dating from 2600 years ago was found to contain numerous magnificent treasures that are now on display in the town, along with parts of the chariot in which the Princess was buried.
The treasure of Vix was an incredible find in this quiet location - discovered by an archaeologist in 1953 when he noticed a slight hump in the ground and proceeded to start excavations - and it is not really explained how it came to be there. The treasures are now on display in a museum in the town, and include such marvels as the tiara that the princess was wearing, an enormous bronze vase, and numerous other rare and exciting treasures, along with more mundane everyday pottery items.
