Chatelaillon-Plage, Poitou-Charentes: tourism & sightseeing

The seaside resort at Chatelaillon-Plage, one of the most visited along the Charente-Maritime coast, is on the coast just a few kilometres south of La Rochelle.
When you arrive in Châtelaillon-Plage you have no doubt about what attracts the visitors - it is very much a typical modern seaside village, developed along the beach and largely consisting of quite modern houses and holiday accommodation.
The beach itself is the longest in the region, at almost three kilometres long, and sandy and popular (and much at its best at high tide). A stretch of about 200 metres of beach is also supervised for your safety.
Behind the beach a promenade is maintained for almost the whole length of the beach, ideal for passing time on warm summer evenings. As you follow this promenade you will also note that there are several traditional villas along the coast - nice to see, since in many of these resorts there are only more modern developments to be seen.
There is also a large indoor aquatic centre in Chatelaillon Plage with heated pools just in case the weather is less than ideal - although this part of the coast is reputed for being within a micro-climate that makes it one of the sunniest places in France. The Aquatic Centre also has water slides and is a fun place for children as well so a visit is recommended (entrance around 22 euros for a family of four).
The rest of the town contains all the ingredients you would expect in a French seaside resort: a casino, a spa treatment centre, a racetrack, mini-golf, various beach sports...to ensure you make the most of your visit.
France This Way comment: There are less beach resorts along this section of the coast than along many parts of the Atlantic Coast in France, and while Chatelaillon-Plage is quite small it is a pleasant place to visit and the beach is welcoming.
Away from the beach
When you need a break from the beach you can visit the shellfish farm at the bay of Boucholeurs, or perhaps explore the Marais d'Yves nature reserve a little way to the south of the town. The extensive saltwater marshes here are a very unusual environment best explored by boat.
Of course, no visit would be complete without a day trip from Chatelaillon-Plage to visit La Rochelle, one of our favourite towns in France, and perhaps a trip to see the beaches and quaint fishing villages on the Ile-de-Ré.
