Chateau de Bourdeilles

Chateau de Bourdeilles sits peacefully on the Cher River, near Brantome in the northern part of the Dordogne department.

The chateau gardens are very traditional French style - plenty of small meticulously shaped shrubs - and do give a lovely backdrop to the chateau. One highlight of our visit was taking a boat along the Cher, although we missed the light show (summer only) which people tell us is very impressive.

In fact the 'chateau de Bourdeilles' consists of two distinct castles - an older castle, and then a larger more recent renaissance castle.

The older fortress section, dating from the 13th century, is the part containing the the impressive octagonal keep.

The adjoining newer 16th century chateau is an altogether more refined building, with rich furnishings throughout.
