Chaine-des-Puys

The Chaine-des-Puys is a chain of extinct volcanoes that runs through the heart of the Massif central in the Auvergne region. It was just 10,000 years ago that volcanoes formed these extraordinary mountains.

Around six of the mountains are dome shaped, and there are also numerous craters. To a large extent these are covered in forests, and you will likely have seen them already  - typically on adverts for Volvic Water.

The best one to ascend and to enjoy the monumental views in all directions if the Puy de Dome, the highest of the domes and in the centre of the chain as a whole. Puy de Dome is 10km to the west of Clermont-Ferrand.

If you are going to walk up the Puy-de-Dome allow about one hour. It is also possible to drive / get a bus to the top, where you will find, in addition to the views, an ensemble of TV and radio masts, a cafe, and an information centre. Don't let that deter you!

Interestingly the Puy-de-Dome had a spiritual significance a few thousand years ago, and there are the remains of a temple near the top - the Mercury Temple.
