Glenan Islands Brittany
The Glenan archipelago is a group of islands found 20 km off the Finistere coast south of Fouesnant, and reached by ferry from Concarneau and Fouesnant.
The most important island in the group is Saint-Nicholas (and its umbilical sister Bananec). The Ile du Loch is the largest island in the group, and is private property. Six other islands and countless rocks and islets make up the rest of the group.
The group no longer has any permanent residents, but is renowned for the diving centre that has been established on the island for 50 years. The water here is especially clear and ideal for diving.
Nearby Penfret is home to a major nautical / sailing school and training centre.
Guiautec Island is best known as a bird sanctuary and nature reserve. (The Natural Reserve of Saint-Nicholas was established in part due to the need to protect a rare flower found in the island, the Narcissus of Glenan.)
