Rabastens-de-Bigorre reviews and comments:

Rabastens de Bigorre is a unique city in many ways. It is one of the very few royal bastides founded in the Middle Ages. In February 1306, on deserted land, a wooded swamp on the border of the county of Bigorre, the seneschal of William Rabastens (Tarn), local representative of the King of France, has found a new city or country house. The rights granted to customs and new residents are a copy of those of Marciac (Gers). A market to be held each Monday, and fairs on St. Louis and St. Vincent, patron saint of winegrowers. This first true country house of Bigorre was a success: the houses of wood and stone, a vast wooden hall, six mills, a large church dedicated to St. Louis, a hospital, a convent of Carmelite brothers and strong fortifications brick and rollers (walls, doors, castle) mark the fifteenth century power of the city. The English occupation, plagues and famines, and Protestantism were among the local crises between 1348 and 1560. The country house was burned down in 1569 during the attack the troops of Catholic Blaise Montluc. The houses, mostly wooden, the church and convent in part were burned. Of this glorious past, it only remains now that the Church (1340), the wall and moat and part of the Notre Dame convent of the Carmelites.
