Details: Ancient Slate works
Famous for their blue-gray treasures the villages of Fumay and Haybes owe their renown to the extraction of slate (Devil's Hole, Hole St Vladimir, ...) dating back to the twelfth century. In the fifteenth century, the activity became regular and was organized by merchants from the Netherlands. The pink or blue slate, of exceptional quality, was exported throughout Europe. Even now the two old mining towns still retain traces of their former prosperity, related to exploitation of the veins of slates. During your stay, look at the homes of character on the Quai des Carmelites and the wheat dock. They date from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Visit the Rue des Rochettes and discover the entrance to the slate gallery. Similarly, faced with the chapel of St. Barbara, a Verdeau (mound of slate debris) is still visible at place du Souvenir Français. www.valdardennetourisme.com
