Visit Cluny, Burgundy
Cluny Abbey is a National Monument of France. This page looks at the National Monument visitor information - see Cluny for more local information.
The spiritual and artistic capital of the Middle Ages. Founded in 910, the Benedictine Abbey of Cluny was governed by a line of exceptional abbots and at the height of its influence in the 12th century, it was at the head of an "empire" of some 10,000 monks. The main abbey church is quite simply breathtaking with the highest vaulted roof of the Romanesque world rising some 30 metres above the nave. The bell tower is equally impressive. The tour also includes a 3D film to gives a sense of the majesty of what was once Christendom’s largest church. Exhibition: “Cluny 2010” – 1100th commemoration of the foundation of the Abbaye de Cluny. A European Heritage site.
