Abbey Saint-Sauveur de Charroux is a National Monument of France.
Important remnants of the Benedictine abbey. One of the most powerful Carolingian and Benedictine abbeys of medieval France owes its origins to the relic of Sainte-Croix. Built and reworked from the 8th to the 15th century, it houses the “Concile de la Paix de Dieu” (religious council) in 989. Its famous octagonal tower, known as the “tour Charlemagne”, its outstanding Gothic sculptures ans its treasures make it one of the most important sites in Poitou’s Heritage.
