Auray
Auray is a pretty town to the east of Vannes. Auray has a lovely old centre with plenty of magnificent medieval houses squeezing in on the narrow streets. These are found especially in the St Goustan (around the old port and the Place St Sauveur) quarter of Auray.
From here you can cross an attractive stone bridge and take a walk along the river front, by the remains of the castle
Other highlights of the town include the church of St Gildas, with a lovely Renaissance porch, and the covered market. If you can, visit on a Monday when the towns open air market is held.
Auray has been classified as a 'town of art and history' (ville et pays d'art et d'histoire), an award given to towns that do their best to make the most of their buildings and architecture.
You might like to take a trip to Ste Anne-d'Auray, a few kilometres north-east of Auray, above all to see the war memorial, and the associated park and cemetery, that mark the deaths of some 250,000 Bretons in the first world war with a long wall engraved with all the names.
