Saint-Jean-de-Cole
Saint Jean de Cole ('most beautiful villages of the Dordogne') is east of Brantome and 7 km east of Thiviers in the north-east corner of the Dordogne department.
Tourist Information and places to visit
Saint Jean de Cole is an attractive - a very attractive - village sat on the banks of the Cole River. The bridge over the river is a lovely arched, stone bridge dating from the Middle Ages and has a lovely view back to the village itself.
The houses in the village are picture-postcard-perfect, with many having the traditional tiled rooves of the region - the village has been said to have the most perfect roofs in France. There are some very attractive colombage houses lining the streets in the village dating from medieval times.
The main 'sights' in the village are the attractive Chateau de la Marthonie, and the church and belltower. They are easy to find, as both face onto opposite sides of the central square in the town. The castle dates from the 12th century but what you see now dates from a 15th century reconstruction. The castle is in the centre of the town and also houses a paper museum.
If you are in the region during the second week of May don't miss the annual flower festival, when the centre of St Jean de Cole positively overflows with colour.
Nearby
Chateau de Puyguilhem is to the west of Saint-Jean-de-Cole.
