Sant'Antonino

Sant'Antonino ('most beautiful villages of France') is in Corsica, about 25km north east of Calvi.

Tourist Information and places to visit

Sant'Antonino is a beautifully preserved village in Corsica, perched atop a 500m high slab of granite, and surrounded by the beautiful Balagne countryside, and olive trees and vineyards. Balagne, in remote north-west Corsica, is commonly known as the garden of Corsica.

Numerous ancient houses, by appearance unchanged with the passage of the centuries, border the maze of narrow cobbled streets. True, the granite from which the buildings are hewn gives a certain gravity to the village but it is not at all sombre.

At the top of Sant'Antonino (reached by donkey if you are so inclined - cars are not permitted into the village) there are magnificent views, both towards the sea and the mountains. You can also see the vestiges of the fortified building that once stood there, built around the 9th century. The village is said to be the oldest in Corsica.

As expected, Sant'Antonino has several arty shops, and bars and restaurants where you can take shade from the hot Corsican sunshine.
