Lavaudieu
Lavaudieu village ('most beautiful villages of France') is 7 km SE of Brioude, in the Haute-Loire department of the Auvergne region.
Tourist Information and places to visit
In a pretty setting on the river Senouire, the principal attractions of Lavaudieu are the bridge across the river, and the abbey.
The abbey is most renowned perhaps for its beautiful painted woodcarving of Christ. So beautiful in fact that it is now held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York!
Happily the abbey has managed to hang onto its notable Roman style cloister - a lovely cloister with two levels of arches - and several other fascinating wall-paintings/murals, carvings and statues
Lavaudieu itself developed around the flourishing benedictine abbey, and remains a pretty, unchanged and traditional village of the region, set in rolling countryside.
There is also a museum in the town - 'the museum of arts and popular traditions', which aims to give an insight of life in the Auvergne region.
